Thiamine deficiency
Thiamine, commonly known as Vitamin B1 is an essential vitamin to all of us – humans and pets! Thiamine is obviously from the “B-Complex,” family and referred to as a “Water soluble vitamin. This vitamin when received as an excess will be expelled by the body, so they need continual replacement. Vitamin B1 is essential to the body, and is utilised in the body for the following functions –
Anti-ageing, cardio health, digestion, hearing, organ health, immune system, metabolism and energy, muscle health, nervous system and skin. For proper absorption and utilisation in the body, it is best consumed with other vitamins and minerals……..but, in their “natural” form rather than their “synthetic” form. Synthetic vitamins have been developed in a laboratory and our bodies simply do not recognise or utilise synthetic forms as easily as they do a natural form.
The recent stories on the addition of “Sulphur Dioxide,” used as a preservative in Petfood and depleting the Thiamin (B1) levels, is a welcoming story that helps to get the message across to the consumer of the dangers of a billion dollar industry praying on the un educated, due to the massive marketing dollars that are available through the huge profits made from a bag of overly manufactured and heat-treated by-product called “biscuits and kibbles.” We also then have to include the “canning” procedures and also included would be the cooked foods that are presented to the consumer as healthy choices for their beloved family member.
Simply put, these foods are very similar to feeding children “Fast food” twice a day, the ultimate conclusion – malnourishment! They contain a by-product produced from these companies, and realise that with some more fancy additives, and synthetic vitamins added, then this represents a balanced meal for the dog and cats. This is a pure profit driven choice.
Getting back to this particular article though – what also needs to be recognised is not only the inclusion of a chemical preservative being included in the chilled meat (which is a chemical, or you could call a poison) expected to be fed daily, but then they are trying to “right” the wrong by the inclusion of this chemical by now adding back a synthetic form of Thiamine to rectify the problem they have caused by adding a preservative. As mentioned above, this synthetic form will not have the same benefits as the pure form that was originally in the product, that mother nature supplied in a wonderfully balanced, absorbable and digestible form.
B1 can be destroyed not only by adding Sulphur Dioxide, but also the following processes also deplete Thiamine – I think you can possibly relate to one of the following if you are feeding your pets - dry food, cooked rolls, cans or chilled meat.
- Heat – cooked rolls, dryfood (biscuits)
- Pasteurization - cans
- Irradiation – due to the gamma-rays.
- Chemicals – preservatives
What we do need to consider is the foods we feed our pets as a “whole” and as complete balanced meal as possible. The “Barf” diet offers this to your companion, it promotes health in every way possible, and by the broad spectrum nutritional profile it offers in its “natural” forms with vitamins, minerals, enzymes and antioxidants all complementing eachother, then this will ensure longevity in health for your pet.
Really guys, if you wanted to be healthy and lose some weight what would you eat – “fast-food” or “fruit, veggies and digestible protein”? If you had cancer would you be rushing for a highly processed manufactured product or are you looking for a “Raw” form of food – vegetable, fruit, nuts? Why? You know why.
Here’s another thought? How come those bags of “Dry dog food” or “Canned dog food” never go off? Well principally they are already rancid prior to closing the top of the bag ready for retail, but with the heat and some form of preservative method or combinations of all, this can supply you a shelf-life of 2 years?????????? What the?
Unfortunately, in a billion dollar industry driven by profit, the welfare of the animal takes a massive step backwards……………
Hope this helps you a little in your decision next time when you might be wondering what you should be feeding the four-legged family member who gives you unconditional love.
Give me 20 blog comments on what else you want to know about processed pet foods, that others won't tell
